Fear Is Not a Good Motivator

A lot of people in leadership positions think that the only way to motivate their staff is through fear but, in my experience, all that does is keep people compliant because they want to avoid punishment—not because they feel great and want to do a good job.
A much better approach to motivate your staff is positive reinforcement. It’s a supportive and nurturing way to encourage employees and yields far better results because people are much more likely to repeat desirable behaviors if you praise the good work they’re doing.
Motivation is about people feeling valued—like they truly matter and have autonomy. All it takes is saying positive things to your staff and being there for them if they ask you for support.
