You Don't Have to Be an Authoritarian Leader to Lead Effectively - Workplace Culture Consulting

If you’ve ever worked for an authoritarian leader, you know what a traumatic experience it is and how little they understand how their thoughts and actions affect others. The irony is that leaders who behave negatively could get so much more done with less effort if they were more supportive and nurturing.

There is a myth that you have to be demanding and harsh to get anything done; that employees need to be bossed around mercilessly or they won’t know what to do. This approach shows a profound misunderstanding of what motivates people and makes them want to do a good job for the organization.

A much better way to lead is to be an empathetic leader—someone who understands that fostering a supportive and nurturing workplace culture leads to far better results than micromanagement and punishment. A great way to get started is to do positive things that build your employees up. Praise them often and genuinely, and take actions to help them learn and grow. Treat them with kindness and always have their best interest in mind and you’ll build a healthier and more productive organization.

The reason I know empathetic leaders are far more effective than authoritarian ones is that, throughout my consulting career, I’ve noticed that everything authoritarian leaders achieve can be surpassed by someone being kind and caring because employees are far more likely to do great work when they feel valued and taken care of.

Let’s work together to foster a supportive and nurturing workplace culture in your organization.
